As the current archivist for the town of Garrett Park, I want to thank you for including us in your interesting facts. However, I do have one correction. The protection of songbirds dates back to 1902. Garrett Park passed an ordinance stating:
“Be it enacted, and it is hereby ordained by the Council of Garrett Park, Maryland, by virtue of the power and authority vested in it by the Act of 1898, Chapter 453 of the General Assembly of Maryland, That from and after the date of the passage hereof, it shall not be lawful for any person, or persons, or corporation, to kill destroy, maim, trap or take by any other device contrivance or means —————— whatever, any song bird within the corporate limits of the town of Garrett Park, Maryland; and any person, or corporation, violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall, upon conviction, forfeit and pay a fine not exceeding the sum of Five ($5.00) dollars for each and every such offence, and stand committed to the jail of Montgomery County until said fine and costs be paid.
Section II. And be it enacted and it is hereby ordained, as aforesaid, that every person, within the corporate limits of said town, who shall expose, or offer, for sale, or have in his or her possession, or custody, any of said birds, shall be deemed guilty of taking the same within the meaning of the preceding section.”
